Yangshuo China Week!

Image
Overnight Train to Guilin Good morning/afternoon/evening to the UWC community, my family, and friends! If you weren't able to talk to me on Facebook during last week, that was because I was in China! Li Po Chun UWC (my school) has a China Week event that happens every year to all of the incoming first years like me. For my China Week group, we went to the small tourist town of Yangshuo, in Guilin. Here is the reflection I made about it. The trip to Yangshuo started with train rides. We started our travels riding the MTR, which we use almost everyday. Everyone had nothing to talk about, really. Crossing the border at Shenzhen was a bit more exciting, since we were technically venturing into a communist country (and most of us have never been in one before). We started talking more at this point because our first glimpse of China was not of rolling hills and villages like we expected in Yangshuo, but tall, towering skyscrapers and bustling streets. From there, we took th...

More than a month later...

Image
Hi guys! It has been more than a month since I arrived here at Li Po Chun UWC Hong Kong, and I would like to update you on how its going over here. Students and teachers at UWC Day, a mural in the middle. The first few weeks here have been a rush, to say the least. Among meeting new classmates, studying (in fear) for pop quizzes, and trying to get to classes and extra-curricular activities on time, there was little time to do anything. UWC Day (and at the same day International Peace Day) helped all of us change pace. The photo below is the mural made using used CDs, spare thread, and cloth by all of the Li Po Chun UWC students. Mural made of used CDs, spare thread, and cloth Each individual CD was decorated by us, and symbolized how different we were from each other and how beautiful we were individually. But what was more important was when we linked them together. It symbolized how we could do so much better together no matter our differences, which embodies the UW...

Opening a new chapter in my life: Li Po Chun UWC

Picked up at the airport by Lyndon (USA) and Sophie (Belgium) Hey guys! I know it’s been quite a while since my last post, but I think you’ll be interested to know what happens in this update! A few days ago, my family and I arrived at Hong Kong International Airport at 11:40 pm. Yes, it was nearly midnight, but get this, it took 30 minutes to get past immigration, and another 20-25 minutes to get our luggage. By the time I met the outstanding and warm UWC welcome (which I REALLY appreciate, being there at 1 in the morning), I was exhausted. Thanks to the patience and hospitality of Lyndon and Sophie (both Second Years), though, I was snapped wide awake, and so began the first days I had at LPCUWC of Hong Kong!   With Filipino second year ate Ferna Simbulan The next few days were mostly filled with getting to know the other students at Li Po Chun and about the campus itself. Aside from many other first years like me coming in, I had the chance to tour the Academic bloc...

My Final Thoughts as a Domuschola Graduate

Image
Receiving my high school diploma Last year, to leave Domuschola International School was an imminent plan.  I yearned to attend a school with a winning football varsity. Who would have thought that 12 months later, I was savoring every little moment I had spent at this school at my recent graduation? Yes, a few days ago, on May 29, 2015, I was standing at the podium, giving an inspirational message to the school, and to inspire and uplift my fellow graduates.  With classmates (new and old) and teachers I will always remember this day when I was surrounded  by my loving and caring classmates and my hardworking teachers whom I will sorely miss because it was at that moment when I fully appreciated what they all did for me.  Mix that up with emotions and you got a fifteen year old who had sweat in his eyes.  Amidst all the goodbyes, it was then that I realized that a year ago, I wanted to leave this school.   I understood how se...

3 Things I Learned About UWC

UWC Philippines' 2015 Reunion Party with Alumni, future scholars, and host sponsor Gigi Virata (daughter of Cesar Virata) Around two months ago, I was given the privilege and honor of a scholarship to attend the Li Po Chun UWC in Hong Kong for my two year IB Diploma Program. I am really excited to go there this August. Just last week, I attended the Global Citizenship Summer Program, a series of talks and activities aimed to introduce us to UWC and what being a Global Citizen is all about. Before I start, here's a little about UWC colleges, taken from their website: UWC was founded in 1962 with the vision of bringing together young people whose experience was of the political conflict of the cold war era, offering an educational experience based on shared learning, collaboration and understanding so that the students would act as champions of peace. We remain committed to this goal today but have expanded our reach to embrace the tensions and conflicts that e...
